Workshops
Photographing Gardens & Plants Throughout the Year: Capturing Autumn's Subtle Colours, Tones and Textures with Andrea Jones
The Apple House, Serge Hill Lane, Bedmond, WD5 0RZ
Thursday 14 November 2024, 9.30am-5pm

With a career that spans 30 years, winner of a Gold Medal and Best Portfolio in the 2024 RHS Botanical Art and Photography show, internationally renowned photographer Andrea Jones will be hosting this garden and plant photography workshop which explores the rich late autumn planting in the gardens at and around the Serge Hill Project, celebrating the soft tones and textures within.

Across the gardens of the Plant Library, Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith’s Barn Garden and Kate Stuart-Smith’s Serge Hill there will be a wide selection of interesting plants to photograph; individually and in combination.

Information

Whether you’re a smart phone user or a DSLR master, this immersive workshop will empower participants to think more carefully about their photography, to avoid ‘snapping’ and to gain confidence that they will get the results they intended.

The day will begin with an inspiring illustrated talk by Andrea Jones on ‘A World of Gardens’, with photographs captured during her 30 year garden photography career. This will be followed by a walk around the gardens with notebooks to seek out compositions and observe details, before a garden photo session revisiting the principles of the golden section and catching the moment when we have the benefit of gentle late autumn light; picking up on all the beauty of late flowering plants, autumn foliage, berries, fruits and hips as well as the larger structures of trees and shrubs.

If the weather is inclement there will be a prepared selection of plant varieties in the Apple House ready for still life photography in groups and /or close up.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

The photography day is aimed at garden lovers wanting to improve their photography of plants and gardens. With Christmas in mind they may wish to leave the day with ideas for prints for wall hanging or greetings cards. Participants might also want to capture their own gardens for a year round photo book. Garden designers and landscape architects might want to make records for their own pleasure, progress or websites.

This one-day masterclass is a celebration of seasonality and a unique opportunity to experience and learn about the Serge Hill Project, meet the team, and nurture your creativity in its stunning surroundings. Workshops are suitable for all skill levels; all materials are provided. Please note, although the photography workshop isn’t weather-dependent; please wear suitable footwear for potential inclement weather.

Students are invited to bring a camera device of any level from a smart phone to a DSLR.
